and games have been widely recognized as an effective strategy in promoting
students learning. Not only students’ conceptual understanding, but also their skills
and learning attitude have been shown to be enhanced by participating in a well
designed game/ simulation. We thus devised computer-based games on the
aggression displaying fish for biology students to visualize all of the various
components of the display. The students were also able to see the overall
picture of each fish and their relative positioning and attitude to aid
learning. For the courtship display between a male and a female, similar
physical changes and positioning were computer-animated for each behavior component
of each of the different-sex courting partners. We then employed four instructional
games on these two behavioral aspects, in which the experiential learning
theory was incorporated. After participating in the learning unit with the
computer-based games, the students were assessed for conceptual understanding
and perception of the games. The significantly higher posttest scores and the
positive attitude toward the game learning suggested the effectiveness of the
games in promoting student learning.
