Rapid changes in the world situation such as a steep increase in population and extreme use of natural resources have the potential to create crises that the citizens of the world[will unavoidably have to face together. Museums are institutions that promote lifelong learning and the informal learning associated with museums creates an advantageous position for communicating critical or hard issues in a more contextualized format allowing not only young students but also adults to be more receptive to the information. Since 2006, the National Science Museum (NSM)Thailand has set the priority to focus our efforts in communicating science related to seven global issues covering population, water, food, health, energy, environment and information distribution systems.
The policy level encourages all departments to utilize all our tools including exhibitions, education programs such as science shows, camps, laboratory programs, outreach programs, magazine, movies and special events, to promote public awareness of these issues with the aim of preparing our people to get ready to adapt their life- styles to cope with these challenges and plan supportive action. We believe museums can be an important neutral window to show how each individual relates to nature and how ones actions can have an impact on the overall health of our Earth. Therefore museums should consider shouldering this role not only as an option but also as a responsibility.
