บทคัดย่อ

Evidence of science communication activities in Thailand can be dated back more than 150 years ago when King Rama IV, the forth king of present dynasty established a regular announcement on the astronomical events and explained that they were natural phenomena. Today, the importance of science communication has been well recognized and getting more active particularly in the past 10 years when a number of universities started to investigate the curriculum plan for science communication, and a number of research agencies started to set up teams to publicize their research works to the public and partnership with professional to make the communication more effective. The National Science Museum (NSM) Thailand, is one of the key agency who intensively develop a lot of science communication activities in order to promote the public awareness of science. NSM also work in collaboration with universities and research agencies in various fields to make sure science and technology are simplified and conveyed to the public. It is found that through an appropriate communication strategy, by making science fun, simple and relevant, the general public tend to open up more to science. Result from survey of the National Science and Technology Fair reveals that more than 60 % of visitors are return visitors and more that 68 % are look forward to visit science fair again in the following year. Reaching out through science caravan as well as online media, also allow more people to be engaged into science.

There are certain challenges facing the future of science communication that we should be aware of and look for measure - As demand of the research and the public in science communication increases, number of professionals who has knowledge and experiences in science communication will be a critical issue in responding to those demand. - Science communication is often seen as one of the public relations or advertising activities. The objectives of the activities should be clearly identify to make sure science is neutral and trustworthy - Leap in technology/larger gap of basic knowledge and current technology. Local diversities in believes, attitude and behavior also making science communication strategy require more complex understanding of the audience - The availability of information online and the fast action of social media could either enhance or deviate learning and interest of science. Science communicators or policy makers will have to foresee the future trends and challenges and be more prepared for these opportunities to connect science to the public.
