Sacura sanguinea n. sp. (Serranidae: Anthiadinae) is described on the basis of two male and one female specimens from the Andaman Sea. The new species is characterized by the following characters: dorsal-fin rays X, 15; pored lateral-line scales 34; gill rakers 8 + 23 = 31; body depth 42.6–44.7% of SL; head length 39.5–41.4% of SL; pectoral-fin length 32.4–33.1% of SL; poorly defined broad yellow band from anterior profile of head to middle of body, the band gradually becoming red around middle of body and ending at caudal-fin base; caudal fin with distinct red spots centrally; and large dark red blotch posteriorly on spinous portion of dorsal fin in females.
The genus Sacura Jordan & Richardson 1910 (Serranidae: Anthiadinae) was revised taxonomically by Heemstra & Randall (1979) who regarded four species as valid: S. boulengeri (Heemstra 1973) (currently known from Oman and Pakistan), S. margaritacea (Hilgendorf 1879) (Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and New Caledonia; Fricke et al. 2011, Iwatsubo et al. 2011, Yoshida et al. 2017), S. parva Heemstra & Randall 1979 (Western Australia), and S. speciosa Heemstra & Randall 1979 (Sulawesi, Indonesia).
On the 7th December 2010, three specimens of an unidentified colorful species of Sacura were landed at Pak Nam Ranong Fishing Port in Ranong Province, Thailand. These specimens are herein described as a new species of Sacura and represent the first records of the genus from the eastern Indian Ocean.
