บทคัดย่อ

The Deep was opened to the public in March 2002 and has already been successful in terms of numbers of visitors. Its purpose is educational, with an exhibition as well as live sea creatures on display. The Endless Ocean Gallery uses a wide range of media to convey to visitors knowledge about sea creatures' survival and threats to them. Since it was opened, the present study has been the first of the effectiveness of the exhibition as a visitor experience.

This research was done to discover visitors’ behaviour in using media and the understanding they gained from The Endless Ocean Gallery. Three different methods were used for gathering data: structured interviews, tracking observation and pre- and post-visit quizzes. Interviews were conducted with visitors at the exit of the gallery to gather data about their use of media, learning and demographic profile. Tracking revealed the attraction and holding power of exhibits as well as which components were used. The pre-visit test was performed with visitors at the entrance of the gallery. The post-visit test was performed with another group of visitors with the same demographic profile at the exit. The data from these two tests was compared for the level of understanding.

The evaluation found that the aquatic display was the favorite medium and had the highest attracting and holding power. Visitors paid much less attention to other informative media: ID text, group text, touch screen computer, TV programme and interactive game. As a result, visitors’ understood the broad idea of the exhibition as intended by the institution but did not absorb more in-depth information.
